With my first child I was unsure about the functionality of a bassinet so instead we set up a pack-n-play next to our bed. This worked (sort of), but we spent months squeezing past it and stumbling over the other baby items on the floor of our room. So for the second go-round I was hoping to find something with more functionality and more attractive than the pack-n-play.
Contours by Kolcraft is an innovative baby gear brand designed to make your life easier. Their products work well and look just as good with their sleek, modern designs for strollers and bassinets. The Contours Classique full-size bassinet is a safe, comfortable option for your sleeping baby and it easily transforms into a Moses basket and a changing table, making it functional beyond those first few months.
The Contours Classique arrived in a large box. The pieces came wrapped within the box and with an instruction manual for assembly. I think very few people actually enjoy product assembly, but I will say that at least Kolcraft made the assembly of this bassinet fairly simple. The instructions were mostly clear and putting it together made me appreciate the quality of the materials used. Everything appeared to be sturdy, safe and soft.
Once assembled, I could really appreciate the look and design of this bassinet. I loved the different textures and the neutral colors. The solid wood frame looked sophisticated and timeless. Perfect for a pretty little girl or a little man. Being able to use it for either gender is important since bassinets are not usually something most parents want to buy twice.
Once it was placed in my bedroom I appreciated it even more! Our bedroom is fairly small and so we didn’t have much room for any kind of bulky baby product. The Contours Classique fit nicely in the narrow space between my bedside table and the wall and looked beautiful with the rest of our bedroom furniture. Nothing cheesy about this bassinet.
One thing I didn’t love was the smell that was present that first night we used it. I felt a little uneasy placing my newborn to sleep in something where she would be breathing that in. Therefore, as with most new children’s products, I would recommend letting the product air out for a few hours once assembling it to let that smell dissipate before using.
The bassinet includes mesh side windows for increased airflow to baby and quilted interior fabric. The retractable canopy shades baby’s face from light, helping create a cozy sleep environment. The canopy does make a slight crinkling noise when being opened or closed, but when I did it slowly it was quiet enough to not disturb my sleeping baby.
The hanging fabric on the sides is lovely, although it did come wrinkled from the packaging. I’m sure it could be ironed or steamed if someone wanted to take the time to do it.
The waterproof mattress felt comfortable, yet firm enough to be safe for baby. It came covered in a thin fitted sheet that could be easily removed for washing. Additional sheets may be purchased online. The waterproof material used on the mattress was nice because it did not make that “crinkling” sound that some waterproof mattresses can make.
The four wheels allow the bassinet to easily be rolled into a different room and can be placed in the lock position as well.
A huge part of what makes the Contours Classique 3-in-1 bassinet great is that it’s more than just a bassinet. Besides being a great place for a baby to sleep it converts into a padded changing table for an infant up to 25 pounds. The changing table has four “feet” which snap right into place over the side bars of the bassinet.
(Isn’t that little baby girl so cute?!?!)
A large storage basket and hanging organizer and diaper stacker keep baby items easily accessible. I loved having a place to store extra blankets and pajamas, pacifiers, diaper cream and wipes. With my previous arrangement all these items were just sitting in a pile on the floor. However, all these additions can be easily removed and stored if for some reason you want to use this product solely as a bassinet.
The diaper stacker is a convenient feature, although mine seemed to sink a couple inches once I placed a stack of diapers in it. Maybe this makes it easier to grab one?
The entire thing can be unsnapped if desired.
I loved the padding on the changing table feature. The soft, padded waterproof material (same stuff as the mattress) can easily be wiped clean and sanitized and provides a comfortable place for baby. The walls on each side help keep baby in place and prevent falls (although you should never leave your baby alone on a changing table anyway).
When not being used, the changing table can be flipped upside down and easily glided into it’s storage position underneath the bassinet. Or, if you want to use the bassinet and the changing table at the same time (like during the middle of the night, for example), the changing table tray could be placed on a bed or on the floor to provide a place for changing diapers.
The removable Moses basket allows you to keep baby close wherever you go. The two padded handles make it easy and comfortable to lift. I’ve used this feature a number of times now since it’s comforting to keep newborns close by. I’ll admit that a time or two already my daughter has enjoyed a nice slumber in her Moses basket while I took a shower. Little did she know that she was sleeping in the bathroom while I bathed.
(She loves her Moses basket – she was juuuuust a bit focused on her next serving of milk)
- Bassinet is designed to be used by infants up to 3 months of age or up to a weight of 15 pounds, and should no longer be used by a child who can push himself/herself up on hands and knees.
- Changing table may be used for infants up to 25 pounds
- One-year Manufacturer Warranty
One thing I’m not really looking forward to is disassembling it to store it for a future baby. It’s too large for my home to store it as is, so disassembling it to put it away is going to be a must. So for this reason I also wish that it came with some sort of storage bag for all the pieces, which would make storage more convenient.
Overall, the Contours Classique 3-in-1 Bassinet has been a dream come true to have during these newborn days. There’s so much change and busyness during these days of many feedings and diaper changes and this product has helped us keep some order in our sleeping space. It also feels really good to lay my sweet baby down for the night and for her naps in a beautiful piece of furniture.
With the holidays approaching – and you know they are because the day after Halloween I started seeing Christmas commercials, oh my! – this would be a great gift for any mom-to-be. Kolcraft and Contours Baby also have a variety of other products that would be worth looking into as holiday gifts.
