Keeping Your Body In Tip-Top Condition When You’re Older

There’s plenty to look forward to when we get older. While youngsters seem to view older people as being over the hill, studies have shown that this can be the most rewarding and happiest time of our lives. However, it’s not plain sailing – very few ages ever are. One of the things you have to contend with is a body that isn’t quite what it used to be. But that doesn’t mean you have to roll over in the face of time! There are things you can do to keep your body healthy, as we outline below.

Stay Active

The most important of all is to stay active. While our body might be pleasing with us to become sedentary, once we do the game is up: if you stay inactive for too long when you’re older, it’ll be really difficult to get your fitness back. When you need to visit the shops, park the car and take a stroll. You should be ensuring you’re doing 15-30 minutes of physical activity each day. It might seem like an effort, but it’ll be worth it, we promise!

Keep the Bones Strong

It’s not just your excess weight and muscles you need to be looking out for: there’s also the matter of your bones. They deteriorate when we got older, and lose some of their bone density, which makes them more likely to break. It’s easy to fall into the habit of drinking more regularly when we’re older, as we don’t have to worry about getting up for work in the morning and it’s a good way for us to get out the house. But you should be keeping an eye on how many units you’re consuming, as this can stack faster than you might realize. It’s also a good idea to take a couple of days at least off the alcohol each week so that you can give your liver a much-needed break.

Playing Sports

Wherever you live, there’ll be activity groups for older people organized for your community. Look at joining one of these: you’ll be staying active, may pick up a new hobby, and will be able to meet other older people and keep isolation at bay, all the while staying healthy.
